Decarbonisation Work Experience

Here at Grimsby Community Energy, we were very fortunate to run a Decarbonisation Work Experience (DWX) for five hardworking students. Hosted at the Business Hive, the students engaged in a range of activities under the focus of sustainability in local business. After communicating with a few businesses that are being supported within the Smarter Energy NEL programme and assessing their needs, the students produced environmental policies, promotional material, social media content, and data analyses.

The SMEs (Small-Medium Enterprises) they worked with provided excellent feedback for the students. Steve from local entertainment business Now Entertain Me gave his response to an environmental policy:

"Thank you for the policy, it reads very well and is exactly what I need."

He even took on the advice from the students to consider rechargeable batteries for his equipment.

Alongside supporting businesses, the students also took an afternoon to develop their professional skills, wherein they each chose a topic of discussion - such as problem solving, stress management, decision making, etc. - and prepared a short presentation to talk about what they'd learned and open up a discussion around it.

They all showed great cooperation and initiative during the DWX, one particularly creative student designed a new pull-up banner for GCE to use at events.

Thank you to everyone involved and we're glad that we and the students had a great learning experience.
